There are many options to look into when buying your first instrument, some better than others. We would love to take the time to help you decide what kind of instrument to buy, where to buy it, should it be new or pre-owned, and how much should it cost. There are many factors that play into this decision that we’ll be glad to speak with you in details about in person or over the phone. We do not sell or buy instruments at RockStars, so you know you can count on us to give you honest advice and help you all the way through this confusing process. What do I need to bring to the first lesson/class?
If you’re enrolled in a lesson or group class for guitar or bass, you must have your own instrument prior to the first day of class. Pianos and keyboards are provided as well as drums but drummers should bring their own drumsticks. If you’ve had lessons before and used any books or materials, bring those to your first lesson as well.
Do I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?
It is ideal if you do have a piano at home, but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard to practice on. It is important to have a keyboard that at least 67 keys and a touch sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play quieter. If you do not have a keyboard or piano, please contact us to set up a complimentary instrument consultation.
Do I need a drum-set at home to take drum lessons?
To get started, no. To play drums, a student needs to develop a lot of coordination. You can practice using a pair of drumsticks and an inexpensive practice pad to develop some basic skills in the beginning. As with any instrument, you get out what you put into it and eventually you will need a set of drums. Our staff is very knowledgeable and eager to offer any advice you seek when it’s time to invest in an instrument. Please contact us for a complimentary instrument consultation.
I don't have any musical background or ability; can I still help my child practice?
Yes and RockStars helps by offering services that many other lesson studios do not. Our online teaching videos are not only there as a reminder for the student but a useful tool for the parents to know what their student should be practicing. The periodic recordings your student does are also a great way to gauge their progress and offer encouragement. Parents who get involved in their child's musical development find it rewarding and it’s a positive influence for the student as well. Parents are also invited to sit in on their child’s lesson from time-to-time to get a sense of what they work on in their lessons.
